DON'T MISS:
Visit System Of Life Institute, the creator of I Like Iceland.
This is the starting point for what I hope will grow into a worldwide Icelandic event.
- Why I Like Iceland?
I have only been to Iceland in my imagination, thanks to Jules Verne's
"Journey to the Center of the Earth," which I read as a youngster.
Only in my imagination, and yet Iceland has held my attention for over 40 years.
I hope to visit Iceland in person someday, but in the meantime, the Internet
gives us a unique, inexpensive way to tour and get to know Iceland better.
- What's I Like Iceland's purpose?
The purpose of the "I Like Iceland!" project is to encourage
those on the Internet, and through them as many others as possible,
to get to know more about Iceland, visit it on the Internet as
well as in person.
- Who's doing it?
Me. Bob Hustwit. Very, very, unofficially. As a matter of fact, nobody but me
(and now you) even knows I'm doing it. I do, however, hope to promote "I Like Iceland!" globally
and throughout the Internet. I thought up the I Like Iceland! idea on December 20th, 1996,
and put up this first information on New Year's Day, 1997.
- What's in it for him?
First of all, I really DO like Iceland, and this is a fun thing to do.
Secondly, I hope that at least some of the Internet traffic going
to Iceland stops by my site for a visit. Thirdly--well, there
is no thirdly. This is just the type of thing I do. Enjoy.
- Our basic premise:
Iceland, the tiny island country in the North Atlantic, deserves more.
Every website should have an "I Like Iceland!" link.
- Why Iceland?
- Iceland's legislature, the Althing, is the oldest legislative
assembly in the world, formed around 930.
- Iceland has five major political parties!
Iceland deserves credit simply for tolerating that many parties.
In my country, the USA, we only have two (or is it three?), and you should see
the trouble that makes for us!
- Iceland has one of the highest standards of public health in the world;
hospital services, once free, are very, very reasonable, medical services very inexpensive.
- Iceland's news media have complete freedom of speech, as do all Icelanders.
- Iceland gets most of its television movies from the United States.
- Iceland, a little over 200 miles from north to south and a little over
300 miles from east to west, has, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica,
"Sparkling glaciers . . . ruggedly beautiful mountain ranges . . .," and,
" . . . a vast quantity of subterranean thermal activity [which]
makes Icleand one of the most active volcanic regions in the world."
- Also, according to Britannica, "The Icelandic sagas . . . are regarded as among the
finest literary achievements of the Middle Ages."
In a completely different vein, Britannica reports that,
"Salmon and trout abound in . . ." Iceland's". . . many lakes and rivers."
- A Few Other Notes:
- Most of the population of Iceland are members of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church, although strictly speaking it doesn't
seem that there are very many people left to evangelicize there.
- Iceland's current population is reported in the 270,000 range,
around 110,000 living in Reykjavik, the capital.
- Reykjavik, Iceland's capital, is the Northernmost country capital in the world.
- HERE'S HOW "I LIKE ICELAND!" WORKS:
There's no charge, there are no fees, and no donations are accepted by us at I Like Iceland!;

I'll also offer an opportunity to visit
